What is Trauma Oil?
Trauma Oil is a blend of three organic flowers that have been soaked in organic olive oil. The three flowers are:
- Calendula (Calendula officinalis)
- St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)
- Arnica (Arnica Montana)
Trauma oil can be used for pain, bruising, wound care, muscle soreness, and arthritis. It can decrease swelling and inflammation in the body, bring comfort to those experiencing joint pain, decrease the duration of the healing process, and much more! If you have a natural first aid kit, be sure and include Trauma Oil among your primary items.
What is an Infused Oil?
An infused oil is a carrier, usually olive oil, that has held herbs or flowers in a jar allowing the plant goodness to infuse into the oil. If you’ve ever made sun tea, you’ve made a tea infusion. The oil that results from an infusion contains wonderfully medicinal properties of the plants that were soaking in it. The resulting product, or the infusion, can be used alone on the skin for healing, added to salves and balms, or used as a base carrier for essential oils. Using an infused carrier oil as a base with an essential oil is a powerful way to double the therapeutic benefits!
What Does Trauma Oil Help With?
Trauma Oil can help with a plethora of aches and pains such as:
- Muscle and Joint Pain
- Sciatic discomfort
- Topical Injuries and Wound Care
- Inflammation of Muscles and Joints
Three DIY Recipes with Trauma Oil for Pain, Bruising, and Inflammation
Note: Since 5% is a strong blend, you can find a dilution guideline chart on this page. I did a podcast episode on Safe Essential Oil Blending and the chart is in the show notes.
1. Muscle and Joint Comfort Blend (5%)
This Muscle and Joint Comfort Blend was created for a friend with arthritis with aching shoulders. The addition of Birch makes this blend very good for relieving pain. For Sciatic Pain I would replace the Juniper Berry with Clove Bud Essential Oil.
Ingredients: 10 drops Birch essential oil (Betula lenta) 8 drops Black Pepper essential oil (Piper nigrum) 5 drops Ginger essential oil (Zingiber officinale) 5 drops Rosemary essential oil (Salvia rosmarinus) 3 drops Juniper Berry Essential Oil (Juniperus communis) 1 fl oz (30 mL) Herb Pharm Trauma Oil 1 oz BPA Free Empty Plastic Flip Cap Bottle Directions: Add the essential oils in the flip cap bottle then fill with Trauma Oil. Gently shake to mix and apply to the painful area as often as needed for pain relief. |
Bruise Relief Oil Blend (5%)
This Bruise Relief Blend I created for my eldest son who has weak ankles and would often sprain them during a soccer game when he was in high school. Trauma oil is a natural, effective, and affordable first aid kit item to have on hand. If you have children or live an active lifestyle, it’s especially important to be prepared.
10 drops Helichrysum essential oil (Helichrysum italicum) 10 drops German Chamomile essential oil (Matricaria reticulata) 5 drops Spike Lavender essential oil (Lavendula latifolia) 1 fl oz (30 mL) Herb Pharm Trauma Oil 1 oz BPA Free Empty Plastic Flip Cap Bottle Directions: Blend into 1 oz. of Trauma Oil and apply to the bruised area as soon as possible after the initial trauma to the area. |
3. Neck Pain Roll-on (5%)
This is very helpful after too much time on the computer…when you sit motionless for hours then suddenly your neck hurts!
5 drops Peppermint Essential Oil (Mentha x piperita) 5 drops Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia) 1 fl oz (30 mL)) Trauma Oil 1 roll-on bottle Directions: Easy Peasy! Just pour the Trauma oil into the roller bottle, add the essential oils, cover with the cap, and shake. Roll over your neck and temples to loosen and reduce pain and stiffness. Directions: Blend into 1 oz. of Trauma Oil and apply to the bruised area as soon as possible after the initial trauma to the area. |
Where to Buy Trauma Oil
Blog Post updated March 30, 2024
Hi Liz, quick question.
Many people feel swelling and soreness after deep tissue massages and this scares them. Would suggest trauma oil to decrease the pain in the body?
This site looks awesome, I make soaps, lotions, and lip balm. going to try the trauma oil.
Thanks
Joyce
Thank you Joyce! You’ll love the trauma oil! Liz
Is there any reason the Trauma Oil cannot be made buy using essential oils instead of waiting for the herbs to be infused?
Thank you,
Cindy
Cindy, the Trauma oil is not made with essential oils. It is made by infusing the plants directly into the oil.
I know it’s made with plant material. I was just wondering if it’s ALSO possible to make it via essential oils (for a quicker method). I use essential oils for a lot of other things. would essential oils not have the same properties? Or is it just that nobody has ever thought of making it this way? 🙂 Just curious.
Cindy, great question! There are two reasons you wouldn’t use essential oils to create a Trauma Oil.
1. These plants don’t contain enough volatile essential oil to make extraction worthwhile.
2. The plant contains many healing components beyond any essential oil that would be present. There is so much good plant medicine available in the leaves and stems as well.
Where can I buy the 3 herbs to make my own trauma oil?
Your link to the Herbal Guy is unavailable.
Deb, sadly Tyler has closed The Herbal Guy. I guess I’ll need to delete his contact information. Thank you so much for brining this to my attention. Liz
Liz how much of each oil would you use to make an infusion with the olive oil? Love your contributions.
Hi Lucy! I don’t measure out any ratio of olive oil to plant material. I just push the plant down into the jar until it is nearly full, then pour the olive oil in until all the plant material is covered. Not very exact, but it works! Liz
I just want you to know how I truly appreciate this particular recipe,, I make it a little bit different than you do, I do Infuse the herbs, but I Infuse them into a fractionated coconut oil, then from there I can either make the trauma oil, or turn it into a trauma cream.
Thank you so very much for this wonderful recipe
Hi Starla! How clever infusing in Fractionated Coconut Oil! I would image it extends the shelf life of the product, too. Thank you for sharing 🙂 Liz

Hi Liz
I’m from the UK and I’ve just joined your newsletter and listened to your very helpful podcast. My essential oil supplier also sells general carrier oils as well as specialised carrier oils such as Calendula oil, St Johns Wort and Arnica . I know it’s not the same as making your own but If I purchase these three and mix them would that be my ‘Trauma oil’? or is there other components needed to make it.
Hi Manjit,
Thanks so much for joining the Aromatic Wisdom community and welcome! I’ve been asked this before because it’s easier to find the three carriers individually rather than as a blend called Trauma oil. I honestly don’t see why that wouldn’t be just as effective provided each individual carrier – Calendula, St. Johns Wort, and Arnica were created from an infusion of that plant. If you blend equal parts, I’d say you’ll have a very effective Trauma-type oil if not an exact replica. If you do this, will you let me know how it goes? Take care, Liz
