Essential Oil of Sweet Orange
Geographical Source: Native to China. Extensively cultivated in California, Florida and the Mediterranean.
Extraction: Like all citrus oils, orange is extremely sensitive to heat and must be extracted by cold expression of the fresh ripe outer peel to avoid degradation of the essential oil.
Characteristics: Sweet orange essential oil is usually a yellowy-orange or dark orange liquid but can also be a pale yellow color. The aroma has the familiar scent of freshly cut oranges and seems to appeal to everyone.
Shelf Life: In my experience, orange has one of the shortest shelf lives of all the citrus oils and becomes bitter and stinky when rancid. This is not an expensive oil so try to use up the bottle in less than one year.
Principle Chemical Constituents: Over 90 percent monoterpenes, mainly limonene.
- Circulatory stimulant
- Digestive aid
Benefits of Sweet Orange Essential Oil:
This oil promotes peristalsis which helps to ease constipation. Make a blend with 1 oz of Jojoba Oil and 15 drops of orange and gently massage the abdomen in a clockwise motion. It stimulates lymph fluids making it helpful in massage for treating edema.
Few oils are as all-out cheering as Sweet Orange. She induces a sense of well-being, lifts nervous tension and stress, having a positive and joyful influence on mood. It’s often the oil of choice when working with children since they like the fresh, familiar scent. When my sons were younger and had sleepovers at the house, I diffused Sweet Orange and Lavender for the fresh, calming aroma.

According to Suzanne Fischer-Rizzi, Lemon and Orange both provide energy. Lemon represents the masculine, supplying energy that aids concentration and refreshes the spirit. Orange, on the other hand, represents feminine powers and gives strength to the sacral chakra (which is the center of Goddess energy) and makes us want to hug the world. Orange allows us to see life with an open heart and awakens creativity.
