What’s in the Mix? Blending Ideas and Prompts is a weekly exercise designed to spark your imagination and get your creative juices flowing. Each week you’ll find a question, a suggestion or a prompt that will help you identify where you’re stuck, where you are flowing and where you need more education. Mostly, prompts are just fun!
About This Week’s Prompt: Are there scents from your childhood that make you feel like a kid again? Does the smell of mint remind you of a garden or meadow that you played in when you were little? Or does the smell of lavender calm you like when you were taking a nap in kindergarten? I’m curious to see your blend ideas and hear why it brings our your inner child.
Share your answer in the comment section below! Let’s inspire each other! By leaving your creative ideas in the comments sections you might give someone a great idea for a listing blend, and someone might give YOU a great idea. Who knows, maybe you’ll become inspired to create a new product or an entire product line from something that is sparked by this exercise!
The minute I opened my first bottle of cedarwood essential oil, it immediately took me back to memories of playing hide and seek in my childhood home. We had a cedarwood armoire stored in our basement and I remember it being one of my favorite hiding places. I closed my eyes as I inhaled the oil and for a few moments I was 8 years old again, giggling in the dark in that lovely smelling armoire, What a simple and lovely memory, and what a testament to the power of aromatics! 🙂
Well, this brings some happy thoughts!
Personally, my happy inner child likes it simple. That cosy feeling of comfort is usually awakened by some crispy, fresh and sweetish-smelling oils.
So, the ratio would be (for a diffuser, depending on how much you use, but I like to put a few drops at a time, so as not to get “overdosed”):
3 drops of sweet orange (mandarin would be even better, depending on the mood)
1 drop lemon
1 drop peppermint
Mmmmmmm what a wonderful description Lidia!
For me Summertime is the domain for letting the playful child free. Adventures, high energy and heat are all mixed in the sensory experience. So my favorite blend is in honor of my grandmother who recognized this and helped us maintain balance. In the heat of the afternoon she would coax us to rest on the shaded porch for a while with stories, treats, and some shared experience ( like shelling peas). My favorite treat was an orange with a hole poked in it where a peppermint stick was resting. The trick was to work the stick in the hole so the juice of the orange would pick up the essence of the mint, and then you would squeeze the juice in your mouth and repeat the while ritual again. You could feel the coolness of the juice, almost as if it had been refrigerated.
So my “Citrus Cooler” is a blend of those two ingredients. It can be as simple as 12 drops of orange with a couple of drops of mint or as complex as a synergy of different citrus( i.e. Bergamot, tangerine.) and different mints. I like to blend it with an oz of a light lotion and use it on the back of the neck, temples, and feet.
Thank you for letting me reminisce about a great woman and a wonderful time in my life.
Lime essential oil reminds me of my childhood. I used to swing on our backyard swing set with my brother, sucking on lime lollipops. To this day, the smell of lime triggers memories of happy, carefree summer days.
How wonderful to hear from you Monica, and I love the memory you shared about lime lollipops and your brother. How lovely!
